The m0n0BSD Hackers Guide

m0n0BSD is a version of FreeBSD that has been stripped down to fit on a Compact Flash card, with a focus on embedded systems like the net45xx series from Soekris Engineering. The procedure that was used is described in the miniBSD guide.

It currently comes with:

Installation

Basically, installation on a net45xx requires the following steps:

download the raw CF image (see below)
write the image to a CF card (> 5 MB), either with dd under FreeBSD or under Windows with my tool, physdiskwrite 0.4
- FreeBSD:
  gzcat m0n0bsd-4.9-std-net45xx-xxxxxxxx.img | dd of=/dev/rad[n] bs=16k
  where n = the ad device number of your CF card (check dmesg)
- Windows:
  physdiskwrite m0n0bsd-4.9-std-net45xx-xxxxxxxx.img
  (you must use v0.2 for on-the-fly gunzip to work!)
put the CF card into the net45xx
power it up
make sure that the console speed is set to 9600 bps in comBIOS
boot
go through the initial setup (self-explanatory)

Known problems

Some CF cards (especially Lexar) show up as primary slave (ad1) instead of primary master (ad0) on Soekris Engineering net4801 boards, regardless of the corresponding BIOS setting. Use other CF card brands (e.g. SanDisk) if you experience this problem.
