Design docs, why BSD?

Hi,

Please excuse my ignorance, I'm new here. Had quite a good search
through the mail lists and website, but couldn't find an explanation for
why BSD (as opposed to Linux and others) was chosen. Maybe we should add
this to the FAQs or have a 'Design Rationale' section? 

So why BSD?
