It turned out to be failing hardware as the cause of all of the problems.
I have replaced the unit and upgraded to 1.2. I am seeing more than 25%
increase in throughput between 1.2b8 and 1.2 final.
Excellent work ladies and gentlemen.

P.S. I relocated my mail server to a different network in NYC in order to
be able to use it's motherboard. Replies may get rejected for the next 24

Subject: [m0n0wall-dev] Problems with 1.2b9 and 1.2 Release
Just a heads up. I was on vacation for the past two weeks and was
previously running 1.2b8. I upgraded to 1.2b9 the day before I left. As
soon as I left town the hotspot went down. When I returned I put on the 1.2
release.
Symptoms:
About every 20 to 25 minutes the external interface transitions to down and
then the internal interface follows making the firewall completely
inaccessible.
I am currently downgrading to previous releases to see if I can resolve the
problem between outages.
status.php is pretty much useless since it is reset every time I cold boot
the firewall and fails to show any signs of anything wrong.
I am currently using the generic images as this system runs on a Mini-ITX
with two ethernet interfaces. I am not ruling out hardware failure at this
point but this could also be happening.
Once I get a more thorough assessment made I will post my results.
Regards,
David
