No special reason at all - in fact, as you can tell, I didn't even
expect people to actually define the PATCHDIR environment variable;
it was merely there as a placeholder. I didn't use it, else I would
have noticed that it causes problems. So you have indeed found a
"bug" in the developer's handbook - and a nasty one at that! We'll
fix that soon.

I use dhcpd from the ports for m0n0wall, even though I don't actually
install the port (only 'make' it and then install the binary in the
m0n0wall rootfs, just as described in the guide).
