how did you configure vn0 ?
this works for me:
# gunzip mfsroot.gz
# vnconfig -s labels -c vn0 mfsroot
# mount /dev/vn0 /mnt
.....
# umount /mnt
# vnconfig -u vn0
# gzip mfsroot
lola
