At the risk of pissing-off everyone here, I think the first thing to  
do is to make this hw work under linux, where there
is a mostly complete i2c bus driver.

that way we know the hw works.  I'm not impinging on your ability,  
but the number of times I've had to deal with slightly wonky to
fully-broken hardware in my career is higher than I'd like.   (You  
can't begin to enumerate my grey hair.)

rather than a full-on LCD, I could see applications for an array of  
LEDs or a pizeo-electric speaker.
