1.1b17, recently released, is the last planned beta release before 1.1. 
I suspect that at this point, the 1.1 release date depends on what
problems (if any) are encountered by people testing 1.1b17.

Yes, I went from 1.0 to 1.1b16 this way.

Two tips that have worked well for me:

Remember to back up your configuration before upgrading...this will help
you if you need to roll back.

If you boot m0n0wall from removable or semi-removable media, consider
swapping the media to do the update.  In my case, I run on a Soekris
net4501, booting from flash, so I "updated" by swapping CF cards.  If I
ran into problems (I didn't), I could always just swap the cards back.
