Hi all!
I took a close look at the OpenVPN code and found out, that Manuel is
just right. Not only that the optional interface handling is buggy,
there are also a lot of other bugs and inconsistencies inside the code,
Sorry, Peter, but this is the truth. After recognising that fact, I
started to code a little bit. Soon I stood in the wood not seeing me to
get out. After thinking a lot, I decided to go further and adjust that
buggy stuff, redesign a lot and add more features. The result is maybe a
lot better than the code I started with, but I don't think, that it's
enough that the code will make it in the next final release.
Nevertheless, I've made a generic PC image out of it and I would be
pleased, if anybody can stress test the code, so that I can fix
outstanding errors. You will find the image(s) here:

Be warned: Make a backup of your current configuration just before you
adopt my image. Downgrading w/o the old configuration isn't easily
possible.
