I think a better default value would be just 'ntp' (which is relative to
the local domain) as this may well point to a local server or one that is
relatively near.

It's the difference between a suboptimal value that works all of the time
(but will almost always need a change), and a value that tries to be
reasonable (and if it works, quite possibly needs no change at all).

Compare this to some mail clients which simply work out of the box if you
have named your smtp and pop3 servers 'smtp' and 'pop3' respectively. It's
the same trick.
