Aren't we talking about m0n0wall here? The HDD image runs perfectly on my old testmachine (Compaq deskpro with CF-IDE adaptor). m0n0wall is as much read-only as possible! Maybe not... In a power fail, you could corrupt your CF image, then you lose the benefits of solidstate booting. Also, my understanding is that CF "disks" have a limited number of write operations before they start having problems. That way you can just use the generic PC (HDD) image without any modifications.
