Well, I made a new cable *and* tried a different switch port and my
packet loss is now zero over several hundred pings so it looks like
this problem is solved.  Thanks for the advice :).  Incidentally, is
there any way to stress test a switch (we have a 24 port D-Link
switch) to see which network ports are dodgy?
