I run my m0n0wall test/backup setup off of a zip disk...  AFAIK There isn't 
really any performance issue as far as network speed and processing between 
the same machine running off the HD or CD-ROM.  I just have a bit of 
slowness here and there on the web interface when on the zip disk.
