PPTP has a lot of firewall and nat issues also.  IPSec is better but
m0n0 doesn't do DHCP over IPsec which is a pain for me when I have 20-40
people...

Open VPN however seems promising...  Single port tunnel over TCP or UDP
and multiple OS support.

Some people don't like to use PPTP in Windows for security reasons, see:

Windows XP also has (limited) IPSec and some OSS projects try to build a

  GUI for it, e.g. http://sourceforge.net/projects/ivpn/

I like the idea of using a full featured IPSec client and will give it a

try.
