It won't do anything on 3Com NIC's, the driver doesn't support it. 
Enabling it doesn't hurt anything, but it doesn't do anything when the
NIC's don't support it.

From 'man polling':
     Device polling requires explicit modifications to the device drivers.  As
     of this writing, the dc(4), em(4), fwe(4), fxp(4), nge(4), rl(4), sis(4),
     ste(4), and vr(4) devices are supported.
