I don't know if this is what you are after, but I use "ipfw show"
to get byte traffic counts and "ipfw zero" to reset them, by
accessing the url

  http://monowall/exec_raw.php?cmd=ipfw%20zero

I used the traffic shaper so I can see the counts for each of
my internal machines.
