Yes it's certainly possible.  Check the m0n0wall documentation for
instructions on how to do this.  IPsec can be used either for
LAN-to-LAN tunnels or for mobile users.

As far as the benefit of PPTP vs. IPsec - PPTP is typically much
easier to set up on the client side of things, but it often has issues
w/ getting through NAT routers.  Consumer-grade NAT routers typically
don't have issues passing PPTP traffic - it's the higher-end "real"
routers (cisco et. al.) that usually need some massaging to get them
to pass GRE traffic, which is required for PPTP.
