VPN's LAN and OPT1

If I'm creating an IPsec VPN is Monowall restricted to first using the
LAN interface or can I actually have a subnet on LAN that I don't want
routed to the VPN and create the VPN on OPT1?

The subnet on LAN is the same as the subnet on the remote end which is
why I'm asking and I can't change the remote end.
