captive portal : problem with error page

hi,
nearly everything is in the subject :
if i upload a custom error page with $portal_message$ , when i try to 
login with a bad password, i get the error page and this tag is replaced 
by an empty string.
I'm using version 1.21 on a soekris net4801 box.
