Just as a question before I start in on this myself.

Is there anyone currently working on support for a serial LCD screen for
displaying statistics, logs, and/or system information in near-realtime?
The unit/software I have in mind would be for those systems that don't
already have the ability to hook up a CRT monitor and have 2 serial ports,
like the soekris 4501 and 4801.
