I thought I had tried it without my XP firewall on, but I hadn't done it
well enough.  The problem was indeed on the client - I added an
exception to the firewall, and now it works beautifully.

I should have thought of this and double-checked it - thanks very much
for your help.

Have a firewall on the client machine?  Try disabling it, or
uninstalling it, to see if it makes any difference.  From some Google
searches, many personal firewalls are good at breaking PPTP and
leaving you with an error 800.
