Usually the CHS setting fixes "cannot find config.xml" upon boot. 
Usually "read error" means you wrote the CF wrong.  Like, in FreeBSD,
if you use something like /dev/ad0s1 instead of /dev/ad0, and similar
under Linux.  There are other causes, which escape me at the moment
(but are covered in length in the list archives).
