You've all been really helpful, thanks a lot!
I've got a m0n0wall box up and running now :-).

I've got more dumb questions though...

I'd like to rename the interfaces on it.

They're named WAN, LAN and OPT1.
I'd like them to be named BORDER, ILO and VLANS, just to make it a lot
easier for myself to figure out what's going on.

Is there a way to accomplish that?

I've added <descr>NAME</descr> tags to all the interfaces in
config.xml, but the change only sticks for OPT1, not for the other
interfaces.
