I have since redone the disk write process on my CF Cards using the windows
utility physdiskwrite with the CF cards in the IDE adaptor instead of the
Card Reader with exactly the same results - cant load kernel.
Ive tried using DamnSmallLinux aswell - following the instructions and
cfdisk reports a fatal error.
I really dont know where to go with this next as I dont think CD rom and FDD
is a good idea for a permanant firewall that will be hosted 4000km from
where i live.
Any other ideas guys?

Subject: [m0n0wall] RE: CF Card Booting Woes - can't load 'kernel'
This is only slightly related... But I had some issues with older hard
disks and m0n0wall. I was installing the image using the windows method
(plugging the drive into my windows machine, then running the program
etc). The drives just wouldn't work - no good/viable reason!
I used the DSL (Damn Small Linux) option. Only to save time, I edited
the DSL ISO and included the m0n0wall HD/CF image in a separate folder.
Then I burned the CD, booted off it, and wrote the image to the HD using
After removing the CD and booting from the HD, the worked fine!
Like I said, only slightly related, but may help/work for you.

Subject: CF Card Booting Woes - can't load 'kernel'
Ive been successfully using m0n0 with the CDrom and FDD method for
but I am now venturing into running it off a CF card. I have purchased 2
Sandisk 256MB Cards and Im running these CF to IDE adaptors - as seen
I have tried the adaptors in 4 different PCs but to no avail!
I am experiencing a weird boot error - the same as the bottom of this
I get "can't load 'kernel'" errors consistantly - with both cards and
different CF/IDE images including the latest beta. Any ideas? I have had
1.22 boot successfully on the same card via a USB Card reader however.
