I have Asterisk as my PBX, so YMMV.
I currently have both SIP and IAX2 trunks, as well as SIP and IAX2
extensions.
They can *all* talk to each other, regardless of whether or not they are
SIP|IAX2|PSTN.
I don't know why someone would tell you to convert your trunk, because
AFAIK, it doesn't matter.
