You're likely to miss the beep in a loud server room, or if you went for coffee.

And if you're configuring the device around colleagues or just other
people in general, the constant beeping tends to get on people's
nerves.

I like LEDs much better.  A led to show that the device has power, one
to show that the software/hardware watchdog is running, one per
interface to show whether it has link, one per interface to show
whether traffic is passing through.

Combine in multi-color LEDs if you want :-).
