Thanks for the info on the transmission error messages, 

Right now I'm still running the 1:1 NAT, at the moment everything seems
ok, still intend to watch it for a couple of days to make sure it
doesn't stop responding all of a sudden again.

I would stick with 1:1 NAT, nothing wrong with the setup you have.

It's not an error, it's normal auto adjustment messages, and it's been
discussed here a bunch - search the archives or the FreeBSD list
archives if you're interested in details.
