Would it be possible to add a feature to m0n0wall that would do an md5 check on the image that was uploaded to m0n0wall before upgrading the system? Perhaps something that would check based on the file name that was uploaded, cross-reference it with md5sums on the site. If the file was found and has a correct version, continue installing. If the file was not found or if the md5sum is incorrect, display a warning that would allow the user to continue if they choose (for those people who use custom images). Or perhaps instead of grabbing from the site, allow the user to enter the md5sum in after uploading the file. This would allow custom images to be verified as well. I would give a stab at it myself, but I just don't have any php skills.
