I wonder what would be wrong with a m0n0wall or pfSense AP setup. I do not have experience yet with the AP functionality, but what I tested so far looks good. Mini PCI cards are available over 600mW nowadays ( I think I even saw 800mW?) Well we can get 35% discount but still 1750$ isn't cheap. Cisco is nice but they are always lagging with market requirements. Although I would really want to find out their life span. Oh yes, I just did some examination of our last casualty in the face of Senao and it seam it died due crystallization of salt on voltage suppressor. It might be a problem because Senao is designed in Pakistan and here in NY we have different air consistence. So far comparing to Europe (yea I know Pakistan is not in Europe) the air here is much more humid and it consist lots of salt. Our antennas get destroyed literary within 1 year, we have to paint all antennas and mounting after we deploy them. Over the past 18 months my company has tried several different so-called "commercial" APs. Our present Senao is beginning to die-it drops connections randomly and locks up regularly. A firmware flash didn't help, nor did hardware resets to default. Our last AP was a US Robotics USR5453 "Professional Access Point"-it only lasted about three months before becoming completely unusable. We have a Cisco new in the box and ready to deploy, just as soon as I have time to replace the Senao. I've come to the conclusion that for heavy duty 24/7 usage we can no longer cut corners and use residential class APs.
