I will take a look at that article, thank you. As for the mac filtering, yes I know that you need some kind of web traffic, but for whatever reason some laptops with vista on wireless do no even bring up the captive portal page until I do pass through IP. This is separate from the problem with the bad IP address in Vista. Hopefully that article helps find and fix the issue when I have people coming down to my office to fix it. I have just been setting a static ip on their computers, and manually adding the WINS servers in order to make it work. Thanks again. -----Original Message----- From: Lee Sharp [mailto:leesharp at hal dash pc dot org] Sent: Thursday, September 17, 2009 5:43 PM To: m0n0wall at lists dot m0n0 dot ch Subject: Re: [m0n0wall] Captive Portal You have several issues here, all mixed togeather. Let me break them out... Bad IP Address on Vista. This is a known issue for lots of people... "Windows Vista cannot obtain an IP address from certain routers or from certain non-Microsoft DHCP servers" http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928233 Passthru MAC does not work. You MUST first do web traffic before it opens. Not e-mail. Not DNS lookup. Not VPN. Not p2p... It is kind of a pre-approval, but you still must log in without actually seeing the login. Allowed IPs bypass this totally. Captive portal does not work. This can be MAC address rewrites by cheap APs or it can be some type of Link Checker not allowing you to go to the login page until it verifies that it is not spam, which it can not do until you log in... Each issue is worthy of it's own thread, and has spawned several.
