Don't plug in the cable until you see this:

"Enter the LAN interface name or 'a' for auto-detection: a

Connect the LAN interface now and make sure that the link is up.
Then press ENTER to continue."

At this point, plug in the cable and press ENTER.

In my experience, plugging in the cable any sooner will cause
autodetection to fail.
