 Subject:  network setup for kvm
 Date:  Fri, 31 May 2013 00:09:16 +0300
Hi,

I'm testing if I'd move my monowall box from old PC to a guest under KVM.
It seems the network doesn't come up. I used the default settings for the
nic, telling libvirt the machine is freebsd type. It sets KVM to use e1000
nic for it. Once I got ping through, but I can't repeat it.

Any experience with monowall under KVM, which network setup have you used
to get it to work?

Here is the simple command to setup monowall under KVM, in case someone
wants to try it:

sudo virt-install -n monowall -r 256 --vcpus=1 --import --disk
/var/lib/libvirt/images/mono-1.3.4.img --os-variant freebsd8 -w
network=private -w network=internet --graphics none

to start it:
sudo virsh start monowall

to get into console:
sudo virsh console monowall

That assumes there are two bridges set up on the host for the libvirt,
named private and internet. The monowall image is the "PC with serial only"
-variant.

This is something in the boot output that makes me suspicious (mem and bus
master bits):
-----------------------------------------
em0: <Intel(R) PRO/1000 Network Connection Version - 6.7.3> port
0xc000-0xc03f mem 0xfeb

em0: Memory Access and/or Bus Master bits were not set!
