Monowall box unresponsive when using Bittorrent or newsgroups

Running M0n0wall 1.0 on a Soekris net4801, using either bittorrent or
newsgroups brings the box to its knees. Pings from BT or NG box to local
monowall box are in excess of 100ms, and no other machines on the LAN can
access monowall. I have a 3.3/256 cable connection, and it seems that when
downloading from the two above sources that anything over 320ish kB/s down
kills the box. Please help, old Linksys and ISA boxes did not have this
problem.
