Found a working firmware version for my D-Link DWL 650 (NICID 8008) at: 
http://linux.junsun.net/intersil-prism/firmware

After flashing to 1.4.9, i found that hostap mode and wep worked just
fine.
1.7.1 should also work, but did not test this. Dont fix something that
works ;)
