That's not a hard problem to solve.  You split it into two functions, one
to switch the console selection in the *running* installation, which could
be issued from the WebGUI and/or the console, and another to save the
current console settings (without changing them), which can be issued only
from the console.  That way you have to prove that your new console access
works before making it permanent.  If you can't, you just reboot (by
power-cycling if need be) and you're back where you were before.
