Using a .img on a Hard Drive

Hello,

I'm used to the ISO's but since I can't seem to compress a .ISO, only a 
.IMG...

If I wanted to put the .IMG on a small hard drive using dd, is there a 
way to still store the configuration of the machine on a floppy?  Or 
will it be stored on the hard drive?  Only reason I ask is that if I 
make changes, I can just dd the new image.
