Why?  Seems a logical inconsistancy to allow aliases in some places and deny
them in others (jeez even my english is starting to sound like
firewall-speak)

The setting for remote syslog server states "IP address of remote syslog
server." That and field does not have a light blue background ;-)
 
AFAIK, aliases work for FW rules, NAT and Traffic Shaper *only*.
