no carrier means that it has no wireless "friends" in clientmodus, when
configured in ap-modus it says:

wi0: flags=8843<UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500
        inet 172.18.16.1 netmask 0xffffffc0 broadcast 172.18.16.63
        ether 00:02:6f:01:5c:81
media: IEEE 802.11 Wireless Ethernet autoselect (DS/2Mbps
<hostap>)
        status: associated
        ssid omni.marten0.wleiden.net 1:omni.marten0.wleiden.net
        stationname omni.Marten10.wLeiden.NET
channel 1 authmode OPEN powersavemode OFF powersavesleep 100

see for wireless config see
