You should be able to ping the gateway no matter what because it is on the
same subnet. Sounds like a hardware problem or maybe a cable problem.

Without a default gateway or route on the AP, you won't be able to
talk to the AP from the LAN subnet.  Check that.

AP configuration changed maybe?  This definitely sounds like the
default gateway on the AP is wrong.
